Description
This is a reproduction of Honoré Daumier’s Rue Transnonain, of which it is said: “Depicting the massacre of innocent civilians, this haunting image employs a particular contemporary event to visualize an inhumanity that might take place anywhere at any time. Daumier’s depiction of the silent aftermath, causes the viewer to imagine the violence that created this scene. This image exemplifies Daumier’s use of the “moral gaze” to ignite the viewer’s sense of justice.”
I was struck by the violence of this picture, but also by the beautiful chiaroscuro employed by Daumier.
